Cannon shot

The traditional cannon shot is fired to kickstart a week in which San Sebastián locals and visitors alike, in growing numbers each year, enjoy a wealth of fun and festivities. Since 1993, on the first day of the Big Week, the person who has been chosen to represent the Master Gunner is responsible for lighting the fuse at exactly 7 p.m. in the Alderdi Eder gardens, thereby opening the eight days of festivities in our city.

Artillero

The noisy start to the celebrations is preceded by a rendition of the song “Artillero dale fuego” [Gunner, light it up], a popular song that has been given new life by the singer Urko, and which is usually performed by a different group each year.
